Summary
The X-Men TCG is a card game by Wizards of the Coast, themed around the 2000 live action film. Fight villians with your X-Men, and be the first player to defeat two villians.
This game is not to be confused with the X-Men sets in the VS system, nor the various battle games (such as Marvel Ultimate Battles, or Marvel ReCharge).
The game was available in a 2-player starter deck (potentially with a full-sized comic book!) and 11-card booster packs.
Card Types
- X-Men - Cards representing the heroes in the game. You start with 3. Each has HP, a power, and strength in the three colors (red, blue, and green). They also have a team value, or deckbuilding.
- Villian - Cards representing the villians in the game. You start with 2. Each has HP, a power, strength in the three colors (red, blue, and green), and belongs to one of the three colors (for deckbuilding purposes only).
- Mission - Cards representing goals in the game. Each has a danger room level and may have an effect or strength boost. Each belongs to one of the three colors.
- Momentum - Cards representing developments in the game. Each has a danger room level, and may have an effect or strength boost. Each belongs to one of the three colors.
- Lightning - Cards represent sudden, unexpected events. Each has a danger room level and an effect. Each belongs to one of the three colors.
- Power Up - Cards representing boosts, which are like Lightning cards, but with ongoing effects. Each has a danger room level and an effect. Each belongs to one of the three colors.
Worth noting: There are two different card backs: one for the X-Men and villains, and one for all the deck cards.
Sets and Decks
The game had one set. It included foil cards and promo cards.
Deck Composition and Contents
Starter Decks
Decks: All Same
Players: Two
Size: Two Reduced Legal Decks
Rarities: Common, Uncommon, Starter
Rulebook: Included
Playmat: Included
Other Items: Dice, Counters, Survey Sheet, Foil Card, Comic Book
The starter decks include two 29-card decks, each with three X-Men and two villians, for a total of 58 cards, six X-Men, and four villians. They also come with three dice, two sheets of counters, and a bonus foil card (featuring a photo of the live-action cast from the movie). (A legal deck is 40 cards, plus 2-5 X-Men and 4 villains, so the two starter decks can be combined into a single legal deck.)
Starter deck contents are fixed, and contains a mix of common, uncommon, and starter-only cards. Many starter decks come in a larger box that includes a full-sized comic book based around the movie. (It was possible to purchase boxes without comics.)
The basic rules are both on the playmat and in the rulebook.
Deck Rarity Analysis
Good. No rares means booster packs are all unspoiled.
Alan's Thoughts On The Game
